Research into the genre of CLASSICAL MUSIC and the CLASSICAL LOOK

Research into the genre:

Music Wordle - From Google Images

Using the 'MINDNODE PRO' application on my iMac I created a mind-map of some areas of the genre of Classical Music, including:
  • Time
  • Types of Instruments
  • Modern Composers (ALIVE)
  • Older Composers (DEAD)
This was to get an understanding of the genre of CLASSICAL MUSIC and what sorts of topics I could look into in more depth for my music magazine.

When designing my music magazine, I will look back at this and put some of these topics, such as history (of dead composers), instruments (advertising new ones or people talking about them) and so on in my contents page, as there will be many articles in the magazine and they're so varied. I will decide whilst picking which types of articles to include and look over the three magazines I analysed.

From Mindnode Pro (The iMac App.)

The Classical look:

Mark Anthony Turnage - Classical Composer

Escala - A modern String Quartet

These artists are wearing smart-casual clothing, however they're not overly formal with their clothing. They wear a smart shirt with a suit jacket or a jumper, but in the case of the male artist (Composer) he is wearing jeans.

When I start to chose what sorts of people to use as the artists for my magazine and the clothing they will wear, I will take into account what I have found here and stick to the theme of smart but not too formal.

THE ARTISTS IN MORE DEPTH - Analysis of images above and below:

ESCALA - The girls in Escala are on a stage (Britain's Got Talent stage). They are wearing simple smart red dresses and holding their individual instruments (stringed instruments) in their hands. They have a professional and smart look about them but they're informal as well, as the dresses, jewellery and hair-styles are not as formal as styles that go to a red carpet or an awards show. The images below show one of their albums and a photoshoot.

ESCALA - At a Photoshoot (Still wearing smart-casual clothing)

ESCALA - One of the album covers

MARK ANTHONY TURNAGE - Mark is is in a building in London with the sunlight coming through the windows behind him. He is wearing a smart shirt with the top bottom un-done and a simple jumper. However, he is wearing jeans with is informal but goes with the overall smart-casual look. He is holding a professional pose and is looking at the viewer. The images below show Mark outside an old famous building and an Orchestra playing one of his composed pieces.

Deciding on the genre of my music magazine

The Genre:

Before I start to research about my music magazine and genre, I knew I would need to choose a genre of music that my magazine would cover.

Ideas of genres:

  • Classical Music
  • Blues Music
  • Jazz Music

Final Decision:

I have decided that the genre of my magazine will be Classical Music.

VIDEO MISTAKE: Ignore the 'By Linda and Trevor Gill' at the end of the video (I tried to change it to my name as the iMovie account is my family's and it wouldn't change unfortunately).
