“SACRIFICE IS NEVER EASY… OR IT IS NO TRUE SACRIFICE” ~ GEORGE R. R. MARTIN
With their Fifth Album and Tour around the corner, Synergy tells us more about their upcoming adventures that are planned for this year.
“Anbu, this is your fifth year together as Synergy. Where did it all start?”
ANBU: “It actually started at school. We had just started at the Sixth Form at St Mark’s in Harlow and we were two of a class of seven, who had taken the subject of Music at A Level. I played the Cello and Poppy played the Violin and we were the only Classical Musicians. It wasn’t until the second year when we actually started to perform together. We weren’t in any other classes together and we always worked independently in our Music classes.I don’t think it was our initial idea of how our lives were going to continue. I was planning on going to UNI to study Chemistry and Poppy was thinking about doing English Literature at UNI. I think that our passion for music and the fact that we had grown to become friends and then more, helped us to bond more, not just socially but musically as well. We went to UNI together and studied Music, as well as writing albums and doing tours around the country.”
“Poppy, your fifth album is called ‘Wicked Sins’. When did it come out and why this choice of name?”
POPPY: “It came out last month and it was the fastest selling album out of the five we have released. We decided that it would be appropriate to continue with the theme of our Fourth Album, ‘Death and all its Friends’ with our fifth album. Therefore, the title ‘Wicked Sins’ came along when most of our pieces had the word ‘Sin’ or ‘Sinner’ in it. A lot of our music is quite dark, twisted and includes a lot of dissonance and minor keys, but all of our music tells a story within it. So the piece: ‘Death and all its friends’ in the album has a story describing death and the other characters with different styles of playing. With me playing ‘Death’ on my violin and Anbu playing ‘Death’s’ friends on his cello.”
“Anbu, lots of your fans have tweeted in to ask questions. @GeoffMcCoy wanted to ask: ‘Do you ever use electronic stringed instruments as well as normal stringed instruments in your music?”
ANBU: “Yeah, we do use electronic stringed instruments as well. Both, Poppy and myself, love to use our normal, classic instruments as they are traditional and the sound is more authentic. However, I love playing my electric cello on stage, when we’re in an arena, like the O2 or Wembley. Although, when we perform in a Concert Hall like the Royal Albert Hall or a small theatre like the York Opera House we tend to use our normal instruments.”
“Poppy, @ViennaShepherd wanted to ask: ‘Do you plan on having your own TV show or going on I’m a Celebrity?’
POPPY: “Anbu always thinks it would be fun to go on I’m a Celebrity and it would be a great experience, but I don’t think I could cope with all the bugs and living in a jungle. A TV show on the other hand, would be a great thing that both of us would love. You never know, maybe next year we might make the small screen!”
“Anbu, apparently this is going to be your first worldwide tour?”
ANBU: “Yeah! Our first four album tours were just in the UK, which was mostly to do with the fact we were at UNI and trying to set up a business with opportunities for young people. But last year, when writing the ‘Wicked Sin’ we both decided it was time to go worldwide with our tour and see the world and our fans in other countries. In relation to on the Twitter questions earlier, we will be taking both our normal and electric instruments with us on our World Tour. The tickets go on sale next month."
“Poppy, tell us the gossip about you and the Film Industry?”
POPPY: “Well. We love watching films and we’ve always been talking about writing music for a film and it finally happened when Hans Zimmer met with us and we talked about a new Action-Adventure-War film that was starting to be scripted. Hans Zimmer talked to us about writing for an Orchestra rather than music with Violin, Cello and electronic instruments. Together, we wrote the whole musical score for the film and it is being released very soon worldwide. The film is called ‘True Sacrifice’. This was such an amazing experience for Anbu and I. A lot of the music had the same kind of atmosphere as from Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbour, The Pacific and Band of Brothers, which are some of our favourite film music pieces. The theme of war, sacrifice, loss and passion is included in our music in our albums. The film is about how a group of special forces soldiers and a group of military intelligence that have to put aside their differences to stop the enemy’s threat. It’s like when Stannis in Game of Thrones talks about true sacrifice, which may be a weird reference but it always comes to mind when people ask about quotes about true sacrifice, I think it is a beautiful quote with a real sense of what true sacrifice is. He said: ‘Sacrifice is never easy… Or it is no true sacrifice’”
